After 2 unnecessary trips to the hospital on Saturday night and Sunday night, I told Dave I wasn't going again until I say. (Those 2 trips were his ideas.) Even though I was having contractions all day Saturday and Sunday, I knew they weren't strong enough or very regular so I wasn't expecting to stay, but after being sent home twice I was going to wait until I had regular contractions or my water broke. Sunday night I slept in between contractions but they were getting really bad. I tried timing them but they were still like 10 minutes apart sometimes even further apart but they were extremely painful! I tried holding out as long as I could. Finally at 5am I was ready to go to the hospital. Dave was still sleeping so I woke him up and he was excited to go. We get to the hospital but I make us stay in the car for a little bit, (I wanted to make sure this was really it) I get another contraction that reminded me why we were there and I was going in no matter what even if it was for pain meds.
So by now it's 6am, we go up to L&D to be monitored and still contractions are way far apart but I am now 4 1/2 cm and they admit me. I get into my room around 7ish. Just in time for all the staff changes. A new Dr. is now on call but luckily my Dr.s office is just down the street. They let him know I'm there and he comes in before work to break my water. It is 8am by now. I was surprised they did it so soon since I needed to have medication for at least 4 hrs for GBS. I was thinking I might try and go without an epidural this time around but no chance! I don't remember my contractions ever being this painful or long before with the other kids so I call for one. The anesthesiologist lowered my dose since it didn't turn out too well the last time with Bridget. It was wonderful! (besides being stuck twice, everything was smooth) The nurse was going to check me again around 10am but for some reason we had her check a little sooner maybe 9:45 and I was 7cm. At 10 am she checked again 9 1/2cm now and said oh he's right there, and told the other nurses to page the Dr. to get there fast. Zach's heart rate also kept dropping and they were concerned so they also called up 2 other nurses/Dr.s just in case. My Dr. finally showed up but he wasn't too happy. He said he was paged only 2 minutes before he showed up so he was kinda upset with the nurses. Anyway, he thought maybe the cord was around his neck by his heart rate so they wanted him out fast. He even asked for some forceps but thankfully didn't have to use them. He had me start pushing but I was having a hard time feeling anything since I had gotten my epidural just shortly before. I pushed for maybe 10 minutes and he was out. No cord around his neck so they aren't sure why his heart rate was doing that but they took him over to the specialist people to make sure he was doing okay and cleaned him up a bit before handing him to me.
Zachary was born at 10:25am weighed 6lbs. 10oz. 18 1/2 in. long. He's a great baby. Not much of a cry er yet but I'm sure it's coming. :) Breastfeeds like a champ.
